Now, instead of merely treating symptoms, there’s a better way for you to enjoy health and vibrant living. Through chiropractic care, your body can return to the state of optimum health it was meant to have so you can experience more energy, flexibility, and freedom from pain.
How does that work? Your body is constantly under the influence and control of the nervous system, which is made up of the brain, spinal cord, and nerves. Nerves are what make it possible for you to see, hear, smell, taste, and feel. Nerves control the functioning of all of your organs as well as directing all the body’s systems. These systems include the immune, glandular, circulatory, muscular, digestive, respiratory, excretory, and reproductive systems, and literally every cellular and chemical process that occurs in your body, allowing you to live well and be healthy.
But if a spinal vertebra gets out of alignment – also known as a vertebral subluxation – it interferes with the quality of nerve conduction. The dysfunction results in loss of health, even though you may not develop symptoms for some time, and those symptoms may not seem to be related to the spine. Therefore, the only way to know if you have a vertebral subluxation is to have a chiropractor check your spine. The chiropractor’s goal is to return the spine to its natural state of alignment, which will eliminate nerve interference. This allows the innate wisdom of the body to perform the multitude of bodily processes necessary for health and well being.
Good health takes time and effort, but the rewards are great. If you are not presently under chiropractic care, please contact us for a health evaluation.
Do you take x-rays before adjusting? Typically, a reputable chiropractor will take and review your x-rays with you before your initial adjustment. You may want to ask about stereo radiography which provides a clearer view of the affected area for better spinal analysis. Conservative practices will avoid taking additional x-rays to maintain your health and safety.
How do you determine the need for adjusting? They should be using a variety of techniques, including the following:
a. Palpation
b. Leg check
c. Graphing with thermal instruments
Do you adjust children and infants? Most good chiropractors will.
Describe the technique(s) you use to adjust the spine. This will tell you what you can expect during your office visits.
Do you do wellness care? Wellness care in this context means visits for check-ups and/or adjustments even when you're not experiencing pain.
How frequently do patients see you for wellness care? After any pain issues are handled, patients should resume a regular schedule of seeing the chiropractor about every 1-2 months. More frequent visits may be necessary for maintenance of good health.
When Dr. Brad Hughes or Dr. Tom Hughes adjusts your cervical spine (neck), he will use the Palmer Toggle-Recoil procedure using a “drop-headpiece”. This safe, gentle adjustment procedure starts with patients lying on a low adjusting table on the side determined by the direction of vertebral misalignment. The patient’s head rests on a headpiece, at the upper portion of the adjusting table, which is designed to move down or drop slightly about a half inch under slight pressure. The doctor makes specific contact on the misaligned vertebra with his hands and then gently and quickly pushes down to make the spinal adjustment. The headpiece drops a slight amount. There is no twisting or turning the neck or head. This very gentle, safe, comfortable spinal correction can be made on any spine, from infants to seniors, including athletes, construction workers, office workers, and anyone else.
Upper cervical (neck) adjustments have a profound effect on the body and address a variety of problems. The brainstem sits in the area between the “occiput” (the back of the skull) and the top two cervical vertebrae (“atlas” at the top, “axis” is below). Because the spinal cord passes through this opening, misalignments can constrict this area, inhibiting nerve communication, which can have a profoundly negative effect on the rest of the body. But with regular chiropractic care, your brain, spine, and nerves can communicate unhindered; your body will simply function better and you’ll feel better, too!
After you’ve experienced the health benefits of chiropractic care, you’ll believe it is important to share what you’ve learned with the people you care about so they can enjoy vibrant health, too. There’s no need for a lengthy, technical explanation about how the nervous system works. All that’s important is understanding that the body will always work better without interference.
