What to Expect on Your First Visit to a Chiropractor

Your journey to vibrant health begins on your very first visit to the Hughes Chiropractic Health Center. First, the one of our family doctors will talk with you about your medical history and any health issues or concerns you may have. Then, he will explain what you should expect from chiropractic care and how we will determine your course of treatment. After that, you’ll receive a simple and pain-free spinal examination.

Next, the doctor will use a thermoscribe device to measure your body temperature along and on both sides of your spine. The reading indicates if there is evidence of nerve interference due to a spinal subluxation, or misalignment. Then he will palpate (feel) the spine and adjacent muscles to check for misaligned vertebra, spinal distortions, and tight muscles. That is followed by a spinal-balance, leg-length evaluation. You’ll lie on your back on the adjusting table, and the doctor will compare your left and right leg lengths to determine if there is a structural discrepancy (one leg shorter than the other) or a functional leg-length imbalance (muscle contracting to pull the hip high, creating a measured imbalance without a structural difference).

The next step is taking the necessary spinal x-rays, which are stereo radiographs – a 3-dimensional view of your spine. These are front-to-back cervical spine (neck) and side views, plus, if deemed necessary, front-to-back lower-spine x-ray views. Analysis of these stereographic x-rays provides a much better view than standard x-ray views. The assessment will determine if you have any vertebral misalignment so the doctor can suggest the specific adjustment necessary to bring that vertebra back into proper alignment. After your gentle adjustment is made, we recheck your spine with the thermoscribe to ensure that the correction has been made.

Follow-Up Visits for Chiropractic Care Ensure Ongoing Health and Vitality

On each follow-up visit, a thermoscribe reading is taken, followed by spinal palpation and a leg-length measurement. If necessary, the spinal adjustment will then be made. If checks show that there is no evidence of a vertebral subluxation, it means that the patient’s body is working well (has no nerve interference), and no adjustment needs to be made. Chiropractic care is the determination of whether a vertebral subluxation is present, locating it, and making a spinal adjustment only if a subluxation is present. The adage, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” applies to health care, so our motto is, “Find it, fix it, and then leave it alone” so the body can function as it should by creating a state of optimum health.

Once you become a patient at the Hughes Chiropractic Health Center, you’ll feel like a welcome family member. We would love to get to know you and look forward to helping you achieve your health goals, starting today!
